Problem
The Harbor Heights neighborhood was built in the 1980’s and has an expired State of Vermont Stormwater permit. Stormwater runoff generated from the development received no treatment prior to discharging to Bartlett Brook.
Description
In 2009 residents worked with the stormwater Utility to install stormwater treatment. The site was small and space was not available for installation of a stormwater treatment pond. An engineer hired by the homeowners association designed an underground storage system to detain stormwater. The design also included a hydrodynamic swirl separator to remove sediment and other pollutants from stormwater runoff generated in the parking lot.
Benefit
Sediment and other pollutants are removed from stormwater runoff leaving the Harbor Heights neighborhood. In addition, the stormwater runoff is detained and slowly released to prevent erosion of streambanks and reduce the risk of downstream flooding in Bartlett Brook.
